Best Hiking and Outdoor Travel Blogs 2017

In this Top 10 list we will attempt to highlight some of the best Hiking and Outdoor Travel blogs available online. We have visited each of these blogs to look at the quality of their content including destinations, equipment reviews, followers to try and narrow it down to only 10. To try and be more specific with our selections we created a set of criteria that we followed when assessing each blog.

  • Must be a hiking, bush walking, tramping, rambling or trekking related blog. (Whatever you call it in your country)
  • Must be current with posts within 2016
  • Must have a good social media following
  • Must provide reviews on the latest hiking gear
  • Must offer great photos.

Hiking The Trail

Hiking The Trail began life in 2013 as a way for Adam Nutting to prepare for hiking the Appalachian Trail. Unfortunately Adam had to cut short the hike 200 miles in however his blog remained and has grown ever since. Hiking the Trail is a fantastic travel blog offering heaps of reviews, great photos and all the info you could ever need on hiking.

Lots a Fresh Air

Lots a Fresh Air is a fantastic bushwalking and hiking blog by Australian Carolyn Ryan. Caro refers to herself as the unexpected outdoors chick and her blog offers heaps of tips on hiking food, hiking fitness and bushcraft. A lot of the articles are about Australian and New Zealand bushwalks (That’s what we call them in Australia) and she offers some excellent local knowledge.

Appalachian Trials

Appalachian Trials is a fantastic blog by Zach Davis to provide information and resources about the thru hiking the Appalachian Trail. The entire trail is a massive 2190 miles and can take between 5-7 months of hiking with the northbound trail starting on Springer Mountain in Georgia and finishing at Katahdin in Main. The Appalachian Trials website contains great articles,  gear advice, maps and other information required to tackle this trek. Also check out the Appalachian Trials book by Zach.

The Hiking Lady blog provides articles, hiking gear reviews and other information to make it easier for women to embrace the outdoors. The Hiking Lady is better know as Carol Roberts who grew up in California and loves to backpacking and the great outdoors. Bushwalking Blog is another blog focused on Australian hiking, news and gear reviews. This fantastic Aussie blog is written by Neil Fahey and features articles about all the bush walks around Australia. Neil is based in Melbourne so a lot of the walks are around Victoria. They are sorted by distance, difficulty, region and features family friendly bush walks. The website also has news on Food, Gear and Tech as well as some great photos.

Modern Hiker was founded in 2006 by Casey Schreiner and is one of the oldest and most read hiking blogs. Modern Hiker is focused on hikes in North America and provides in-depth information including Maps, GPS data and directions for each hike. They also have a shop offering gear, books an other hiking resources.
