CamelBak eddy .75L Water Bottle

The CamelBak eddy is currently our favorite plastic water bottle from the ones we reviewed. Completely redesigned it features a flip top bite valve and internal straw that lets you sip easily on while on the go. The bite valve is also replaceable and compatible with other CamelBak bottles extending the life span of the water bottle.  We found that the valve allowed a good flow of water while remaining spill free.

The eddy includes a loop handle which can be connected to most bags using a carabiner and it also snugly fits inside the bottle holders on most backpacks and day packs. The water bottle weighs 5.4 oz / 153 g and light enough to carry while backpacking or hiking. The capacity of this bottle is 750ml or 25oz which will keep you hydrated for a few hours between refills.

The eddy is dishwasher proof making it easy to clean while CamelBak recommend the occasional deep clean using soap or mild bleach. We found the straw can get a bit dirty over time so it is a good idea to maintain over the course of its life.

Overall we think this is a fantastic plastic water bottle and we recommend it for all travelers, if you are doing extreme backpacking then you may want to look at the version with a larger capacity.

  • Durable plastic extends lifetime
  • Light enough for regular travel use

Travel Water Bottle Buying Guide

Are you looking to buy a new travel water bottle in 2020?

This buying guide will help you identify the features and types of water bottles you should consider as well as the best water bottle brands online. This guide includes travel water bottles made with plastic, glass and stainless steel and provides the benefits of each type. We will also look at collapsible water bottles and bottles offering inbuilt filtration systems.

back to menu ↑

Why should you buy a reusable Water Bottle?

In 2020 most travelers would be fully aware of the advantages of buying a good quality water bottle over continually buying bottled water. If you are still not sure then this buying guide will help you make this important decision and highlight all the benefits of a reusable water bottle over store bought plastic bottled water.
Bottled water is a massive business worldwide with brands owned by the large companies including coca-cola, this bottled water is effectively tap water which is available free of charge in most developed countries around the world.  Unfortunately some countries you may visit do not have access to clean drinking water, this doesn’t mean you automatically have to buy bottled water from the store. Reusable water bottles are available with built-in filters to enable you to use them when the quality is questionable and remove bacteria’s causing sickness. Buying bottled water can fill the gap in these areas if you do not have access to one of the filters buy I would treat it as a last resort.

The following are the benefits of a reusable water bottle.

Environmentally Friendly
Buying a reusable water bottle is a lot better for the environment. A large amount of resources are used in manufacturing bottled water and unfortunately most of the empty bottles end up in landfill or even worse enter our water system via rivers and oceans. In most cases the plastic used is not biodegradable meaning it will not break down over time or take 1000’s of years.

What a lot of people do not realize is that water is used during the process of creating the empty bottles used in bottled water. It can also take 3 times the amount of water to produce the bottle as it does to fill it.

Save Money
Buying a reusable bottle will save you a lot of money over the life of the product. A good quality reusable water bottle can be used countless times. Even the most expensive water bottles ($150+) with inbuilt water filtration and all the latest accessories are still cheaper in the long run than paying up $4 for a bottle of water from a store in the middle of a tourist destination.

Save Space
A lot of backpacks and luggage have extra storage especially for water bottles. You can also buy collapsible water bottles that are completely flat when empty and not in use.

Refilling tap water is just as healthy for you as buying bottled water, even if the big manufacturing companies try to tell you different in their marketing campaigns. Most tap water is filtered using carbon as well as UV treated and sometimes chlorine to remove all the bacteria before it reaches the end user.

When to buy bottled water?
If you are visiting 3rd world countries then I recommend you buy a good quality water bottle with filtration included like the Life Straw. In this instance a lot of water borne bacteria could be present and using filtration or buying bottled water is the only alternative to prevent sickness.

Before buying a water bottle in 2020 ask yourself the following questions.

How will I use my Water Bottle?
When you are deciding on the best water bottle to buy to need to consider how you will use the bottle and what activities you will be doing. If you like to backpack for long distances you may want to consider a water bottle with a large capacity or even look at the backpacks with built in water storage.

Do you know your destination?
What is your travel preference? If you prefer to just visit cities then you will probably get away with a smaller bottle. You will get more opportunities to refill your water bottle using water fountains or taps. If you prefer to hike long distances in the middle of nowhere then you need to ensure you get a larger capacity water bottle to ensure you are always hydrated.

What climate will you be visiting?
Warmer climates will require a water bottle with more insulation to prevent the water from become warm and undrinkable.  If you are visiting a colder climate you may want to fill your bottle with hot water for making coffee, tea or soups. Plenty of people have used a water bottle filled with hot water in their sleeping bag to keep them warm on cold winter nights.

What capacity water bottle do I need?
Water bottles come in a variety of sizes and shapes, the capacity you need if up to personal preference. The world health authorities recommend you drink at least 2 litres of water a day. Keeping that in mind you need to consider the destination, climate and what to the access to water will be like at your destination. Make sure you buy one big enough for your needs and small enough to be easily transported. CamelBak offer a great online Hydration Calculator

Do you want hot and cold drinks?
Are you looking to use the water bottle for hot and cold water? Answering this will help you decide the type of bottle you should buy. Metal water bottles can get too hot if not insulated correctly while plastic bottles can be used with hot and cold water.

How often will you access your bottle?
Consider how often you need to access your bottle or refill it, some models offer the ability for quick access while some are screw caps. This can be down to personal preference however you need to ensure you choose the correct bottle for the activity you are doing.

Is buying multiple bottles better?
If you are a regular traveler it may be better to buy several different types of water bottles so you have the best option for the trip you are tasking next.

Tips for using water bottles

Travel Water Bottle Tips

Empty bottle before Airport Check In
Most airports and some train station will make you empty your water bottle before going through the security checkpoint. This can be annoying if you have just bought a bottle from the shop. With a reusable water bottle you can empty it out and then refill using a tap, or bottle filling station once you are into the boarding area.

Drink water to avoid Jet Lag
Water has been proven to help fight Jet Lag when traveling. Drink plenty of water while in the air to remain hydrated and avoid sugary drinks or alcohol which helps to dehydrate you. Humidity is low inside an aircraft cabin meaning the air is very dry, this is part of the reason you don’t feel your best after a long flight, taking regular sips from your new water bottle will help you overcome this. Some newer planes have water filling stations on board or you can kindly ask your flight attendant to refill your water bottle for you.

Know the water quality of your destination
Before you leave for any new destination check out the local water quality, the World Health Organization offers some great information on countries where the water quality is not ideal. If your travels take you to one of these countries you cannot fill your bottle or even brush your teeth. In this situation it is a good idea to buy a portable water filtration system or a filtered water bottle. Some of these bottles offer inbuilt filters that can remove 99.99% of bacteria that causes stomach bugs including E.coli and salmonella.

Stay Hydrated at all times
Keeping hydrated is the key to helping your body cope with the rigors associated with travel. As you know your body clock is thrown into chaos if you travel to different time zones or across the equator. When your body is tired and run down it is a lot easier for you to pick up colds and flu’s which can quickly ruin your vacation.

Ensure you constantly refill your water bottle whenever possible while traveling to avoid any signs of dehydration. Usually thirst and dark colored urine are the first signs of dehydration followed by headaches and more serious symptoms. It can be easy to forget to drink your daily requirement of 2 litres of water while traveling as you are caught up in the moment and having fun.

Different Climates
As mentioned earlier visiting different climates affects the amount of water you need to consume daily. In a hotter or dryer climate you sweat a lot more than you normally do leading to early signs of dehydration. Make sure you adjust your water intake accordingly especially if your are doing activities like hiking or adventure sports.

Protecting your Water Bottle
It is a good idea to protect your water bottle to help it last longer. Most backpacks and daypacks have built in pockets available, check out the size and make sure the water bottle you buy fits snugly into this holder. If you have an older bag without a bottle holder you can buy a cheap Carabiner, or look for water bottles with one built in. You can then easily clip your water bottle to your luggage.

Look for durable water bottles that can survive what travel throws at them including bumps, dents and scratches.

Clean your water bottle regularly
A lot of people have asked how to clean and maintain your water bottle. If you are using a plastic water bottle and it starts to show signs of mold or calcium deposits I would suggest throwing the bottle out and buying a new one. Metal water bottles can be cleaned using baking soda and vinegar or even placing in the dishwasher. Klean Kanteen offers some great videos showing how to take care of your bottle.

Different types of water bottle materials compared

After you have answered some of the questions above and know how you are going to use your bottle, you need to determine what material the bottle should be made of. The most common materials used to manufacture the bottles include metal, plastic and glass and before deciding what material you need to consider the pros and cons of each type.

back to menu ↑ back to menu ↑

Plastic Water Bottles

Plastic Water bottles are the most common type of bottle you will find. Because plastic is a very versatile material it can be molded into a wide variety of shapes and design. Plastic is cheap to manufacture which helps keep the cost of the water bottle to a minimum compared to steel or glass.

When we are talking about plastic bottles we mean reusable plastic bottles and not the store bought equivalent.

Plastic is quite a durable material which will allow a lot more knocks and bumps before breaking compared with metal water bottles. It is also very lightweight which helps you reduce the amount you have to carry while on your trip.

back to menu ↑ back to menu ↑

What about BPA Free Water Bottles?

BPA (Bisphenol A) is a chemical used in the manufacturing process to help harden the plastic. Bottles made with BPA have been shown to break down over time with the potential of the toxins of the plastic leaching into the water.

In 2020 it is extremely unlikely that you will find a plastic water bottle for sale that contains BPA. All the plastic bottles we have compared are BPA-Free

In 2020 it is extremely unlikely that you will find a plastic water bottle for sale that contains any BPA and most manufactures will declare that the bottle is BPA Free.

  • Lightweight compared with metal and glass
  • Cheaper alternative than metal or glass
  • More durable than glass and shatterproof
  • Water in a plastic bottle can be hot, cold or frozen
  • Huge variety in design

  • BPA Health Concerns
  • Possibly leaching of plastic
  • Plastic is less durable than metal
  • Plastic can taint if you use liquid other than water.
  • The plastic can crack after years of wear and tear.

back to menu ↑ back to menu ↑

Metal Water Bottles

Metal water bottles have become a lot more popular in recent years as designs have become more user friendly instead of the standard flask design. Different sizes are available as well as many different colors.

We recommend that you only consider metal water bottles that have been made using stainless steel and not cheaper aluminum.

We recommend that you only consider metal water bottles that have been made using stainless steel and not cheaper aluminum. You need to remember that metal conducts heat so the bottles tend to heat up quite quickly in a warmer climate unless the bottles have been insulated. Also if the bottles are not insulated then you cannot use them for hot liquids as the outside of the bottle will heat up quickly.

Stainless steel water bottles offer a good alternative to plastic as they are non-reactive and there is no need to worry about plastics leaching into the water over extended use. So if you are worried about the potential health effect of BPA or other toxins then metal might be a good alternative. Some people do complain about a metallic taste however If you buy a the good quality stainless steel water bottle then this should be an issue

Metal is also extremely durable and can take a decent knock and dent which only affects the look of the bottle and not its usage.

  • Non-Reactive – no leaching of toxins
  • Lighter than glass alternatives
  • Durable and can survive
  • Good range of sizes and colors now available

  • Metal heats up quickly in warmer climates.
  • Not good for hot liquids
  • Heavier than plastic bottles
  • Metallic taste with some cheaper bottles

back to menu ↑ back to menu ↑

Glass Water Bottles

A lot of people think that water tastes better from a glass bottle however they are not a great option for traveling.
Glass is the most fragile of the 3 materials tested and can shatter under some circumstances. Some of the newer models are a combination of glass inner with an outer made of rubber, silicon or plastic to help add to the bottles overall durability.

I would only recommend glass water bottles for low impact activities or to keep at the hotel or apartment. My experience is they bang against other items in your backpack and have you constantly worried about them breaking.

  • Great Tasting with no metallic or plastic taint
  • Newer models are becoming more durable

  • Glass is the heaviest of the materials tested
  • Most fragile and possibility of shattering

back to menu ↑ back to menu ↑

Filtered Water Bottles

If you are traveling to a third world country, or even refilling your bottle from a river or stream then the risk of water borne illness can be quite high.

Filtered Water bottles like the Life Straw Go are now quite common and allow for you to scoop up water from any location and safely consume without risking illness. These bottles offer inbuilt water filters that can remove 99.99% of bacteria including E.coli and salmonella.

These filters are ideal if you are heading to a third world country as nothing ruins a vacation that a case of the Delhi belly.

Hydration Bladders

Hydration bladders have become a lot more common over the last few years with daypacks like CamelBak offering built-in bladders as well as inserts for backpacks available. These are not technically a water bottle but we have included them for comparison purposes.
The water bladders are usually designed for hiking or backpacking and have a larger capacity to avoid you having to constantly refill your water bottle. Away from the great outdoors they offer little functionality and are unlikely to be used while at the hotel or touring the city. We recommend the Camelbak HydroBak 50 oz Hydration Pack

  • Large Capacity
  • Easy access using built in straw.
  • Bladder is part of the backpack

  • Limited use outside of hiking
  • Most fragile and possibility of shattering.
  • Expensive

Water bottle cap types

Water bottles now offer a large variety of cap types with options including screw caps, quick access caps, sports caps and straws. When looking for a water bottle make sure the brand you buy offers replacement parts which help to add features and extend the life of the bottle.

Pop Top style sports caps have become quite popular on water bottles and allow one-handed access which is handy when travelling especially with luggage or backpack. Inbuilt straws like the Camelback Eddy are also extremely handy for traveling and offer a large amount of replacement parts. Screw caps are not as convenient as you are required to stop to unscrew the cap.
